VEGA 1/0563/18: The Philosophical Analysis of the Blurring of Boundaries in Contemporary Bio-Discourse, 2018 – 2021, principal investigator.
Project description: The project's main aim is to analyze changes that cause multilevel deletion of borders in contemporary bio-discourse. On the one hand, the process of wiping off the clear-cut boundaries between scientific areas is based on effective cross-connection between knowledge, methodological approaches, and research aims of various scientific disciplines; on the other hand, what is affected by the process of deletion is the validity of existing identification criteria, frameworks of interpretation and standards of evaluation. Concerning the changes in contemporary bio scientific research, the objective of the project is 1.) to analyze shifts and deletion of borders from the point of view of three perspectives - ontological, epistemological, and ethical perspective, 2.) to identify the new relevant evaluation criteria for the assessment of the latest results that stem from the contemporary bio scientific research, 3.) to explore the conditions of coexistence of the old and new evaluation criteria.
APVV-17-0064: Analysis of the multidimensional character of trans- and posthumanism, 2018 – 2022, investigator.
Project description: The project's main objective is multidimensional transdisciplinary research of mutual dynamic relationships related to the issue of human gene editing and posthumanism in five research domains: biology-biotechnology, philosophical reflection, (bio)ethical review, biopolitical analysis, and democratization of science, art and culture. In particular, the project focuses on a philosophical examination of the concept of trans- and posthumanism with an emphasis on human germline cell genome editing in relation to human nature, genetic determinism, and aesthetic transformation of the human body. The issue of a transformation of the human biological species (homo sapiens) is analyzed in the context of the conflicts between a realist and social-constructivist understanding of biological categorization. At the level of bioethical and biopolitical reflection, the project analyses the impact of trans- and post-humanist modification of the human genome on society, its political institutions, and the process of science democratization.
NFP313010ASN4: Addressing societal threats in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 – 2023, investigator.
The project description: The project is interdisciplinary in nature, responding to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in the natural, health, social, humanities, and economic sciences. It integrates the knowledge and skills of the creative staff of UCM Trnava and provides answers to two fundamental problems: increasing the capacity of infrastructure and human resources for real-time diagnostics and medical assistance and addressing the serious social problems due to the isolation of individuals of the population. The project mobilizes the components of the university to address the current issues caused by COVID-19: 1. Prevention and protection against infection caused by the coronavirus; 2. Medical/clean technologies aimed at diagnosing and treating patients; 3. Diagnostics and testing; 4. Protection of the population and societal values.
VEGA No. 2/0163/22: Literature in Bioethics and Bioethics in Literature, 2022 – 2025, deputy principal investigator.
Project description: The project is inspired by the concept of interdiscursive relations, whose author is the leading French linguist D. Maingueneau (2004), and the idea of narrative bioethics (H. Dubiel 2011). The object of investigation in the present project is the analysis of the relations between literary (media) and bioethical (philosophical) discourse. The aim of the project is to push the boundaries of the study of the interdiscursive communication between literature (broadly conceived) and bioethics from the traditional analysis of the depiction of the doctor-patient relationship in literature towards the so-called humanistic turn in bioethics. Methodologically, this means that literature and art create a space for enriching the narrowly rationalistic ethical discourse with humanistic and philosophical-psychological aspects, including phenomenological and hermeneutical approaches to applied ethics, especially bioethics.
