VI.5 - Participation in conducting (leading) the most important research projects or art projects over the last six years

KEGA Project No. 012UCM-4/2024 (solution period: 2024 - 2026)

Women in science and technology - raising the awareness of male and female students in the field of gender equality

project leader

Equality between women and men in research and innovation has been a priority of the European Research Area (ERA) since 1997, when the European Commission in its communication "Women and science: mobilising women to enrich European research" set out as an important strategic goal the achievement of gender equality in the field of science and research. At the same time, it is a cross-cutting priority of the Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030. The European Commission's strategy for equality between women and men for the period 2020-25 defines the vision, political goals and measures to achieve concrete progress in the field of gender equality and to achieve the goals of sustainable development.

The research team based the project's intent on a document approved by the Government of the Slovak Republic in 2021, which is the National Strategy for Equality between Women and Men and Equal Opportunities and the accompanying Action Plan, developed by the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic. one of the priorities and strategic areas that the national strategy covers is education, science and research.

A key obstacle to innovation is knowledge, competence and skills gaps, which hinder productivity growth and economic development. The lack of trained professionals in disciplines related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) can weaken the innovation potential of society. A wide gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of STEM fields around the world. Although women's participation in higher education has increased, they are still underrepresented. Slovakia is no exception. The untapped potential of qualified women represents an important lost opportunity for the entire society. Even though the importance of this problem is increasingly recognised, Slovakia faces a lack of information that prevents researchers from deepening their understanding of this phenomenon and policymakers from proposing effective actions. The aim of this project is to contribute to the academic debate by examining the main drivers of gender inequality in STEM disciplines, also from a historical perspective, and to raise students' awareness of gender equality, which, according to our pilot survey, is perceived very generally only through the media. The project aims to promote the global contribution of women in science and technology among the target group of male and female university students and to promote gender equality through a graphically attractive web portal in English with interactive e-learning elements to support the increase of communication competences in this global language. The project has the ambition to create material that can be used in an international environment and that is one of the reasons why it focuses on the English language. Preliminary research has shown that students and university graduates are insufficiently prepared in the area of communication competences in English as the language of science and technology, as well as communication competences in the global labour market. Therefore, we used the competences of the members of the research team, and the intention is to use the digital space of the web portal also for the development of communication competences through the incorporation of didactically attractive interactive elements in the context of the content objective of the project. Last but not least, we are responding to the experience from the pandemic period and the unpreparedness of the educational environment of all levels of schools for a sudden transition to online teaching mode, and by including elements of e-learning we will offer it as a content resource for curricular use in education.

Development of an interactive e-course using "SMART" technologies to develop algorithmic thinking and programming skills

researcher

The results of the project will enable access to the e-learning educational environment with all its advantages. It creates an intelligent environment for education with the help of the latest information technologies and a perspective platform for distance learning based on the experience of the pandemic crisis of COVID 19. The added value of the project is the incorporation of elements of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) – integrated teaching of a foreign language and a professional subject. All materials will also include a creative form of education in the English language in the form of glossaries of professional vocabulary, simple exercises, audiovisual elements and animations to support communication skills in the field of study. The research team is composed of experts for the creation of content, digital educational content and its application in educational activities. Last but not least, the resulting product should offer relevant institutions such as the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, the State Pedagogical Institute a universal educational resource in the context of the state educational program for secondary vocational schools.
