VI.5 - Participation in conducting (leading) the most important research projects or art projects over the last six years

APVV -20-0263: Current Culture-Forming, Identification and Revitalization Processes in the Environment of Ethnic Minorities: Slovaks in Argentina and Canada.

2021-2025

principal researcher

Annotation: The migration of Slovaks to Overseas is a continuous process lasting approximately 150 years. It consists of currents and waves of migrants, which are specific politically, socio-economically, religiously, or genderly. The character of the source and destination localities, together with the culture of migrants and then also their descendants, have formed an extremely differentiated network of communities, institutions, organ izations and individuals, identifying as Slovaks/with Slovak origin to many different ways. Some of them, by tradition, import and their own invention, participate in the creation, maintenance and construction of the "overseas" construct of Slovak culture, especially in the form of cultural heritage, but also new forms of culture and art. What are their strategies and motivations for maintaining a minority identity today? What benefits do members of these minorities gain and expect? How are these strategies changing under the influence of cultural and linguistic globalization, mass media, deethnization and deconfessionalisation on the one hand, and glocalization, cultural diversity policies, support for national minorities and the multiculturalism ideology o n the other? At the turn of the millennium, "traditional" ethno(confessional) minorities (and identities) were uncompromisingly supplemented by "new" minorities (and identities), defined by many types of differences. Are they in competition with "traditi o nal" minorities (including identities), or vice versa? In comparison with european ethnic/state nationalism, the multi -ethnic nature of Argentina and Canada society creates a completely different world for Slovak immigrants, in which they build social netw orks, a new home and raise children. The content of intergenerational transmission is mainly determined by the ethnic heterogeneity of marriages (wich is multiplied by each next generation). What determines their un/sharing of their cultural heritage, l anguage and identity?

VEGA 1/0280/23: Final phase of ethnolinguistis assimilation. On the example of German ethnicity in the village of Krahule and its surroundings

2023 - 2025

researcher

Annotation: The research topic correlates with current social science trends and paradigms, focusing intensively on the topic of ethnolinguistic identity, multilingualism, multiculturalism or cultural plurality and hybridity. In this context, it is possible to assume that the translated project can be viewed thematically and conceptually in the context of current and prospective trends, processes and changes in the field of political, social and demographic situation of Europe. At the same time, however, it remains fully and unmistakably anchored within the ethnological terrain of Slovakia. In addition to specific documented data, their analysis and interpretation, it is an outline and analysis of generally applicable themes and models. The results of the proposed project have the ambition to become a model concept and a scientific monograph, the significance and benefit of which would exceed the short-term horizon of a case study. It is also a certain counterpart, a comparison of the findings and data of the successfully completed APVV project and a contribution about the little-studied and disappearing population of Carpathian Germans in Slovakia.

VEGA 1/0016/26: The impact of the war on the migration, acculturation andethnoidentification processes of Slovaks in Transcarpathia

2026-2028

deputy principal researcher

Annotation: The aim of this project is to reveal what consequences the Russian military invasion of Ukraine brought for the Slovak minority in Transcarpathia. We focus on the impact of the war on three interconnected areas of the minority existence of Slovaks in the multiethnic composition of Transcarpathia. We pay attention to the development of migration movements of Slovaks, their acculturation and the associated relations with the Ukrainian majority and ethnoidentification strategies in the context of the war since 2022. In addition to economic, political and security aspects, this brings direct and indirect consequences that also affect ethnic minorities. Whether we are talking about internal migration within Ukraine, which is shaping the ethnic composition of some regions, or about the possibilities of cultural life and maintaining ethnicity through education, religion, and media, which are dynamically changing. We therefore want to capture the reaction of the Slovak minority to these significant historical movements and find out how they affect its existence.

KEGA 005UCM-4/2020: Educational support for the newly accredited study program Ethnology-Middle Eastern Studies (creation of the university textbook History of Middle Eastern Culture)

2020-2022

researcher

Annotation: The aim of the project is research, analysis, summarization and pedagogical application of current knowledge on the culture of the medieval Middle East with an emphasis on inter-civilizational contacts. This knowledge will subsequently be used as a basis for the development and publication of a university textbook supplemented with an explanatory dictionary. One of the goals of the project is the pedagogical application of a systematized set of knowledge that the student will acquire during his studies. This will provide him with knowledge on the basis of which he will orient himself in the material and spiritual culture of the medieval Middle East and will be able to identify and interpret important events and causal connections that influenced the formation of the cultural environment of the Middle East in a specific time and space, with consequences reaching the present day.

APVV 18-0196: Nitra County Notitia by Matthias Bel (interpretation and application)

2019-2023

researcher

Annotation: Matthias Bel in his work Notitia Hungariae novae historico-geographica (hereinafter referred to as the "Notitia") offered a contemporary perspective of the state, significance, reception and specific facts concerning Hungarian counties within the Habsburg Monarchy. Humanities and social sciences researchers (e.g. historians/historical geographers, philologists) in Slovakia have studied various aspects of the life and work of this representative of the Enlightement. The core of the research was represented by Bel's publishing activities, his religious life and indepth probes into author's selected works. During the past decade a bilingual (Latin-Slovak) version of the Liptov, Orava, Turiec and Trenčín County were published. However, based on the scholarly literature research, it is evident that the Notitia of a particular Slovak county (or its selected parts) has not been sufficiently analyzed and scientifically interpreted from the philological, historical or historical-geographical and ethnological point of view. Nevertheless the results of analysis and interpretation of Bel's work within the scope of these disciplines can be effectively applied for instance in the context of revitalization of regional identities on the example of the landscape and particular ethno-cultural phenomena of selected Slovak regions. The essence as well as the main objective of the project is a Slovak translation of the Latin original of the Nitra County Notitia (lat. COMITATUS NITRIENSIS) and its historical-geographical, philological and ethnographic analysis. By employing specific methods we will identify and reconstruct selected regional identities of the examined area – e.g. cultural landscape and its structure, character of settlement, a way of life or the specifics of socio-professional classification of the county population in the first half of the 18th century. The outputs of the project will have a material, analytical and application character.
