Annotation: The migration of Slovaks to Overseas is a continuous process lasting approximately 150 years. It consists of currents and waves of migrants, which are specific politically, socio-economically, religiously, or genderly. The character of the source and destination localities, together with the culture of migrants and then also their descendants, have formed an extremely differentiated network of communities, institutions, organ izations and individuals, identifying as Slovaks/with Slovak origin to many different ways. Some of them, by tradition, import and their own invention, participate in the creation, maintenance and construction of the "overseas" construct of Slovak culture, especially in the form of cultural heritage, but also new forms of culture and art. What are their strategies and motivations for maintaining a minority identity today? What benefits do members of these minorities gain and expect? How are these strategies changing under the influence of cultural and linguistic globalization, mass media, deethnization and deconfessionalisation on the one hand, and glocalization, cultural diversity policies, support for national minorities and the multiculturalism ideology o n the other? At the turn of the millennium, "traditional" ethno(confessional) minorities (and identities) were uncompromisingly supplemented by "new" minorities (and identities), defined by many types of differences. Are they in competition with "traditi o nal" minorities (including identities), or vice versa? In comparison with european ethnic/state nationalism, the multi -ethnic nature of Argentina and Canada society creates a completely different world for Slovak immigrants, in which they build social netw orks, a new home and raise children. The content of intergenerational transmission is mainly determined by the ethnic heterogeneity of marriages (wich is multiplied by each next generation). What determines their un/sharing of their cultural heritage, l anguage and identity?
APVV 15-0360: Rozmery revitalizácie etnickej minority na Slovensku: Interdisciplinárny záchranný výskum zanikajúcej etnickej skupiny Huncokárov, 2016 – 2020, riešiteľ/ Dimensions of the revitalization of the ethnic minority in Slovakia: interdisciplinary rescue research of the defunct ethnic group Huncokárov - co-researcher
Annotation: The project is focused on research into the life of an ethnic group of German lumberjacks known as Huncokári. This group has not yet been the subject of systematic scientific interest. Mountain lumberjacks came to Little and the White Carpathians, mostly from Lower Austria and Styria, in the 18th century by the Bratislava mayor Pálfi invitation. Thanks to their isolation and specific socio-professional status, they preserved unique manifestations of material, spiritual and social culture until the middle of the 20th century (endogamy, a unique dialect, bilingualism, strong ethnic feeling). The Huncars formed a specific linguistically and socially relatively closed settlement, which was largely dispersed after World War II and still survives today either through the individual memory of several of their descendants or as part of the collective memory of today's local communities living near their former settlements. Using selected ethnographic, linguistic, pedagogical, and historical methodological approaches, we completely document and analyze selected areas of life and the formation of the ethnic identity of this group. We will focus on the circumstances of their arrival, the specific way of life, conditioned primarily by the isolation of their settlement and specific socio-professional classification, their own linguistic dialect, as well as forced acculturation. From an ethnological and linguistic point of view, this is rescue research among the last living descendants of this minority. The outputs of the project have a material, analytical, and application character.
VEGA 1/0383/18: Dynamika a revitalizácia kultúrneho dedičstva v kontexte transformácie kolektívnej identity, 2018-2020, riešiteľ Dynamics and the revitalization of cultural heritage in the context of the transformation of collective identity. Co-researcher
Annotation: Cultural heritage is a dynamic subsystem whose content, functions and use strategies are primarily determined by the relevant community. The identity of the community is significantly represented by cultural heritage. Axiological understanding of the cultural heritage of the carriers is an effective precondition for its survival. However, some traditional elements, complexes, and phenomena are not realised by the bearers as values and are disappearing. Changing the content, features, and the use of cultural heritage can cause the transformation of collective identity, or on the contrary, to stabilise it. The stability of collective identity can be a result of controlled dynamics of cultural heritage, e.g. through revitalization and cultural management. The optimal model of the subject’s research is a regional and community level of cultural heritage as a cultural potential. What is the relationship between the dynamics of cultural heritage and the transformation of collective identity?
Imrich and Margita Stolarik Memorial Scholarship and Research Bursary, 762200301512: Archive research in Slovak Archive UO Ottawa, Canada, 2019, hlavný riešiteľ, principal researcher
Annotation: The Slovak archive is an indispensable source for research of materials that reflect the intergenerational transfer of cultural heritage. Themostimportantpersonalitiesinthelives of individual Slovak communities, so that we could understand the processes of identifying and transforming the identity of offspring and developing their ethnicity in intergenerational contexts. It would be a combination of historiographic and ethnological archival research with conclusions and interpretations of a cultural type. The outcome of this research would be a study published inscientific journal registered in the WoS or Scopus database, as well as a contribution to a scholarly conference focused on ethnic, identifying and cultural development processes in the environment of minorities. The material would be part of a forthcoming publication on Slovaks living abroad.
APVV 18-0196: Vedomosti Nitrianskej stolice M. Bela (interpretácia a aplikácia), 2019-2023, riešiteľ Nitra County Notitia by Matthias Bel (interpretation and application), co-researcher
Annotation: Matthias Bel in his work Notitia Hungariae novae historico-geographica (hereinafter referred to as the "Notitia") offered a contemporary perspective of the state, significance, reception and specific facts concerning Hungarian counties within the Habsburg Monarchy. Humanities and social sciences researchers (e.g. historians/historical geographers, philologists) in Slovakia have studied various aspects of the life and work of this representative of the Enlightement. The core of the research was represented by Bel's publishing activities, his religious life and indepth probes into author's selected works. During the past decade a bilingual (Latin-Slovak) version of the Liptov, Orava, Turiec and Trenčín County were published. However, based on the scholarly literature research, it is evident that the Notitia of a particular Slovak county (or its selected parts) has not been sufficiently analyzed and scientifically interpreted from the philological, historical or historical-geographical and ethnological point of view. Nevertheless the results of analysis and interpretation of Bel's work within the scope of these disciplines can be effectively applied for instance in the context of revitalization of regional identities on the example of the landscape and particular ethno-cultural phenomena of selected Slovak regions. The essence as well as the main objective of the project is a Slovak translation of the Latin original of the Nitra County Notitia (lat. COMITATUS NITRIENSIS) and its historical-geographical, philological and ethnographic analysis. By employing specific methods we will identify and reconstruct selected regional identities of the examined area – e.g. cultural landscape and its structure, character of settlement, a way of life or the specifics of socio-professional classification of the county population in the first half of the 18th century. The outputs of the project will have a material, analytical and application character.
