VI.5 - Participation in conducting (leading) the most important research projects or art projects over the last six years

2022 – 2025 VEGA 2/0163/22 – Literature in Bioethics and Bioethics in Literature. Main Investigator: Mgr. Bogumiła Suwara, PhD. (ÚSvL SAV), Deputy investigator for Education section: doc. Mgr. Jana Tomašovičová, PhD. (FF UCM). Investigator.

Abstract: The project Literature in Bioethics and Bioethics in Literature is inspired by the concept of interdiscursive relations, whose author is the leading French linguist D. Maingueneau (2004) and the concept of narrative bioethics (H. Dubiel 2011). The object of investigation in the present project is the analysis of the relations between literary (media) and bioethical (philosophical) discourse. The aim of the project is to push the boundaries of the analysis of the interdiscursive communication between literature (broadly conceived) and bioethics from the traditional analysis of the depiction of the doctor-patient relationship in literature towards the so-called humanistic turn in bioethics. Methodologically, this means that literature and art create a space for enriching the narrowly rationalist ethical discourse with humanistic and philosophical-psychological aspects, including phenomenological and hermeneutical approaches to applied ethics, especially to bioethics.

2021 – 2024 The Evolution of the Concept of Shame in the Ancient and Contemporary Moral Philosophy with an Accent on Its Ethical Functions (VEGA 1/0020/21). Investigator.

Anotation: In the Antiquity, the category of the shame was one of the most important concepts in the practical philosophical discourse. During the 20th century, this category becomes – though not dominantly – object of reflection in psychoanalysis, phenomenology and existentialism. The objective of the project is to explore the transformation of the forms and functions of the notion of shame in the ancient and contemporary moral philosophy. We shall focus on different meanings of the ancient Greek concepts of aidos and aischyne, both of which can be translated as shame. Our attention will be concerned with the content of the above-mentioned concepts (and their Latin equivalents) from Homer to Seneca. In the contemporary moral philosophic discourse concerning the shame, we shall follow two main motifs: 1) the return to its ancient starting points; 2) the inquiry into its transformative moral potential.

2018–2020 Common Educational Programme for Cross-Border Excursion Teaching to Promote the Education of Civics (with Masaryk University, Brno) (NFP304010C840) Investigator and Chief Executive for UCM. https://www.muni.cz/en/research/projects/38244

The project will create conditions for improving the employability of graduates’ teachers of Masaryk University in Brno and the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava. A joint educational programme of excursion teaching in the cross-border region of Hodonín, Breclav, Skalica, Senica and Trnava will be developed, tested and implemented. Continuous cooperation between partner universities in training future teachers of civic education, civic science, basics of social sciences and teaching of these subjects in the regional education system of the Czech Republic and Slovakia will contribute to overcoming social and cultural barriers between the border regions. The project has two target groups – students in full-time and continuing education and teachers. The outputs of the project will also be applicable for the public in the field of culture and tourism in the region.

2018–2020 Ad Fontes Cynicorum Socraticorum – Sources and Interpretation of Socratic Cynism (VEGA 1/0864/18) Deputy Principal Investigator.

The subject of the research proposal is the historical and philosophical reflection of the Socratic school of thought of ancient cynics. The specificity of the project is the application of the classical „ad fontes“ principle, complemented by the addition of the existing source base in the Slovak language and by interpretations of the newly created source bases in the form of scientific editions of other figures (Crates, Hipparchia, etc.) and interpretative works. The relevance of the present research project is guaranteed on the one side by the scientific results of the previous research of the core of the scientific team (on Antisthenes and Diogenes), which we are continuously linked to, and on the other side by the fact that the cynicism was one of the most influential philosophical movements in the history of philosophy. Therefore, the project focuses on the history of cynic ideas and proves that there was a strong non-Platonic tradition inspiring historical as well as present philosophical thought.
