Matthias Bel´s Nitra County Notitia (interpretation and application) - principal investigator, APVV-18-0196 (2019 - 2023). The project, in which the departments of four universities in Nitra, Trnava and Zvolen together with the Institute of Archaeology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences participate, is to five years to contribute to a more comprehensive research and interpretation of the philological view of Matthias Bel's work, historical, historical-geographical, ethnological or archaeological research. The results of the interdisciplinary study Bel's work can be effectively applied to the revitalization of regional identities on the example of historical landscapes, historical landscape structures and ethno-cultural phenomena through the application of a cultural itinerary that would bring historical, natural and social phenomena of the territory on the basis of the knowledge gained from the interpretation of Belo's work. The essence and the aim of the project is the Slovak translation of the Latin original of the Nitra County Notitia (lat. COMITATUS NITRIENSIS) and its study in terms of history/historical geography, archaeology, ethnology and museology. https://www.crp.gov.sk/vedomosti-nitrianskej-stolice-m-bela-interpretacia-a

Natural Conditions of the Nitra County in the 18th Century as Seen by M. Bel (university textbook) - principal investigator, KEGA 005UCM/4-2019 (2019 - 2021). M. Bel in his work Notitia Hungariae Novae historico-geographica (Notitia) offered a contemporary view of the specific realities of the Hungary. A literature search shows that Notitia of any of the Counties (as a whole, or a part or a section thereof) has not yet been more comprehensively investigated and scientifically interpreted from historical and historical-geographical research, including the application of specific results in the educational process of Universities. The essence and the aim of the project is the Slovak translation of the Latin text of the section De natura et opportunitatibus Comitaus Nitriensis (Section on Nature) of the Notitia of the Nitra County and its interpretation from the point of view of historical geography. The output will be A university textbook (with the working title 'Nature, landscape and man of the Nitra County in the first half of the 18th century as seen by M. Bel) useful for teaching historical geography, environmental history, regional history, or classical languages - Latin (or Old Slovak literature), geography, etc.
Current culture-building, identification and revitalization processes in the environment of ethnic minorities: the Slovaks in Argentina and Canada - Co-investigator, APVV-20-0263 (2021 - 2025). The migration of Slovaks overseas is a permanent continuous process lasting approximately 150 years. It consists of several streams and waves of migrants specific politically, socio-economically, religiously, educationally, socio-professionally or gender-specific. The nature of the source and destination locations, together with the cultural makeup of migrants and their descendants, to to date have shaped an extremely internally differentiated network of communities, institutions, organisations and individuals who, in different degrees and in different ways identify themselves as Slovaks. Some of them, through tradition, importation and their own invention participates in the creation, maintenance and construction of the "overseas" construct of Slovak culture, especially in the form of cultural heritage, but also new forms of culture and art. What are their strategies and motivations for maintaining a minority identity in the contemporary world? What benefits do members of these minorities gain and expect? How are these strategies (and communities) changing under the influence of cultural and linguistic globalization, mass media, de-ethnicization and deconfessionalization on the one hand, and glocalization, the politics of cultural diversity policies, promotion of nation-world activities and the ideology of multiculturalism on the other? "Traditional" ethno(confessional) minorities (and identities) were uncompromisingly supplemented at the turn of the millennium by "new" minorities (and identities), defined by a variety of types of otherness. Are they in competition with "traditional" minorities (and identities), or vice versa? Cultural, social and historico-political multiethnicity of Argentina and Canada creates for Slovak immigrants, in comparison to the European ethnic/civic nationalism, a completely different s vet in which they build social networks, a new home and raise their offspring. Content of intergenerational transmission is here (with exceptions) determined by the ethnic heterogeneity of marriages (multiplied by each successive generations). What determines the non/shared concepts of their cultural heritage, language and identity today? https://www.crp.gov.sk/aktualne-kulturotvorne-identifikacne-a-revitalizacne-procesy-v-prostredi-etnickych-minorit-slovaci-vargentine-a-kanade/
The vanished landscape of Matej Bel (Reconstruction and environmental history of the landscape in the 18th century) - co-investigator, VEGA 1/0770/24 (2024 - 2026). Mathias Bel is also one of the most important personalities of Slovak historiography, not only in the first half of the 18th century, in the context of research on the history of the environment (landscape). We can partially imagine what the landscape looked like in his time, its use by man and its gradual anthropogenic transformations by studying his work Notitia Hungariae Novae historico-geographica..., in which he elaborated the characteristics of the natural environment, history and society of specific Counties in historical Hungary. The cartographic works created by his collaborator S. Mikovíni are also important in interpreting Bel's descriptions of historical regions. The reconstruction and computer visualisation of contemporary landscapes and their use (i.e. historical land use) requires a comprehensive approach to a particular topic. Historic landscapes, or their relics in contemporary landscapes, should be investigated using environmental history techniques, including computer modelling or visualisation of vanished landscapes of the past. https://www.fpv.umb.sk/katedry/katedra-geografie-a-geologie/veda-a-vyskum/projekty-a-granty/zaniknuta-krajina-mateja-bela-rekonstrukcia-a-environmentalne-dejiny-historickej-krajiny-v-18-storoci.html
Historical gallows of western Slovakia (research, documentation and presentation) - co-investigator, APVV-24-0044 (2025 - 2029). Research into the history of criminal law, historical criminality, and related efforts at redress in the form of sentencing is one of the traditional interests of both legal and general history. In the Middle Ages and the modern period, execution sites were part of the contemporary practice of administering justice for grave transgressions against the social order. Systematic research on execution sites and gallows has almost no representation in Slovakia. In terms of archaeological research, the situation has slowly begun to change only in recent years. Gallows as structurally simple objects occurring in execution sites are in most cases difficult to archaeologically detect in the field. Their remains belong to monuments that have often been completely or partially destroyed, and only fragments and field relics remind us of them in the contemporary landscape. Archaeology alone is able to provide important information and supplement written sources concerning events related to the execution of the death penalty. The social significance of the execution sites for historical communities, as well as their spatial positioning in relation to landscape or urban landmarks, creates good conditions for their presentation in various forms, combining information systems, educational trails and, where appropriate, direct architectonic references in the field. The essence of the project is to identify gallows in the administratively demarcated territory of western Slovakia. The aim is to expand the knowledge base on these architectures in Slovakia from the High Middle Ages and the Modern Period, which will complement the decades-old extensive database of execution sites in Western Europe. On the basis of surviving written sources of a legal nature, vedutas, cartographic documents and field archaeological research and survey, as well as interdisciplinary cooperation, we will significantly advance the research on this issue. An integral part of the project will also be an assessment of the potential for heritage protection of these sites and the subsequent prospect of presenting them to the public.
