VI.5 - Participation in conducting (leading) the most important research projects or art projects over the last six years

Project: APVV-17-0123 "Self-harm: definition, prevalence, influencing factors and implications for clinical interventions"

Principal investigator: assoc. prof. Slavka Demuthova, Ph.D.

Project annotation: Intentional self-injury in the adolescent population is so undesirable and out of many (not only medical but also psychological) aspects, it can be understood as a risk behaviour that its exploration by psychologists is necessary. Until now, self-harm has been primarily understood as a symptom present in some psychiatric diagnoses or diagnoses of disharmonic personality development and thus primarily related to the clinical population. Up-to-date finding from abroad as well as the trends revealed in the domestic context, however, point to the fact that there have been changes in prevalence, forms, purposes, and binding to clinical syndromes in the field of self-harm. The recentness of the chosen topic is also reflected in the latest worldwide accepted review of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5 2013), which at the end of the chapter "Conditions for Further Study" refers to the problem of non-suicidal self-injury as to an area requiring intensive research. Presented project plans to execute the basic research providing data on the prevalence of self-harm in the population, on its forms and reasons, on the understanding of the concept by target group itself, on defining this concept in the context of the emergence of new forms and intervening factors, as well as on establishing a relevant methodology able to detect the occurrence and specific context of this phenomenon. An integral part of the project is a subsequent accessibility of the results obtained to the wide range of professionals, the formulation of implications for the clinical intervention and a publication of research results in the relevant scientific and professional forums.

Project. VEGA 1/0042/17 "Risk behavior in adolescence, the incidence and influencing factors"

Principal investigator: assoc. prof. Slavka Demuthova, Ph.D.

Project annotation: Typology of antisocial behavior allows the identification of specific groups in the population (Del Bove, Mackay, 2011; Smart et al., 2004). We will verify the possibility of Czech version typology (Blatný et al., in press; Sobotková et al., 2009) replication in Slovakia. We assume new typology will be similar in distinguishing different groups of adolescents according to the severity of their antisocial behavior. Types will be characterized by risk factors. Methods: SAHA questionnaire, the personality traits identification method (BFI) and BSCS, a method assessing dispositional self-control. The focus in on internal factors. By General Theory of Crime (Gottfredson, Hirschi, 1990), self-control level is a key factor for the antisocial behavior development. Due to the expected size of the research sample (N=1000), the aim is to create a structural model detecting the interactions among self-control, educational style, inherited characteristics and environmental factors in their effect on antisocial behavior.

Project: VEGA 1/0251/21 "Human Facial Attractiveness – the Key Characteristics and Psychological Mechanisms of Its Assessment"

Principal investigator: assoc. prof. Slavka Demuthova, Ph.D.

Project annotation: The perception of a human face and its attributes represents a key moment in any social interaction. The assessment of attractiveness, its impact on human behaviour and the way it is experienced have long been the subject of many areas of science. However, various areas of psychology not only provide a description of this phenomenon, but have the potential to explain the internal mechanisms and reasons for the assessments. The possibilities provided by contemporary IT (the ability to generate digital facial composites) allow detailed observations of the consequences of specific modifications of facial attributes on the perception and assessment of these by individuals. The principal objective of the project is to identify those key characteristics which have an impact on the perception of the attractiveness of a human face (both from the viewpoint of the perceived and perceiver) as well as the psychological mechanisms that contribute to the perception and assessment of human facial attractiveness.

Project: APVV-17-0123 "Self-harm: definition, prevalence, influencing factors and implications for clinical interventions"

Principal investigator: assoc. prof. Slavka Demuthova, Ph.D.

Project annotation: Self-harm in adolescence has become pandemic (45.5% of adolescents in Slovakia are affected) and poses serious risks both psychologically and somatically (a quarter of adolescents report self-harm, including suicide attempts). The difficulties associated with self-harm, the fact that it is often concealed from close relatives and its taboo nature in society significantly limit the ability of affected young people to seek help. Two factors limit the necessary professional help – the lack of data on important clinical aspects of self-harm and ethical/legal limitations in providing interventions for minors. The proposed project aims to provide missing data on 1/ psychological difficulties/complications associated with self-harm and 2/ possibilities/limitations of care for adolescents within the existing Slovak and European legislation. Through a detailed analysis of data collected from clinical, school and counselling psychologists as well as from adolescents, it will be possible to provide information on the most common psychological difficulties, complications or disorders associated with self-harm, as well as the nature of their relationship to it. Providing this information will help develop the knowledge base on this topic (in response to the American Psychological Association's global call), make important data accessible to practitioners, contribute to a better understanding of this high-risk behaviour, and create more effective intervention and prevention measures. The analysis and interpretation of the legal frameworks of the current Slovak and European legislation and relevant documents (ethical codes) will provide professionals with a practical guide for possible courses of action in individual cases, thereby eliminating numerous barriers to providing help from psychologists. The planned outputs ensure visibility of the results not only in the scientific field but also directly anticipate the provision and distribution of materials for practitioners.

Project APVV-19-0166 "Analysis of the Conceptual and Qualitative Domains of Aesthetic and Moral Emotion"

Principal investigator of the cooperating organization and deputy of the principal investigator: assoc. prof. Slavka Demuthova, Ph.D.

Project annotation: The project aims to carry out an analysis of aesthetic and moral emotions, compare them and consider the potential for a cognitive explanation of both types of emotions. The main objective of the project is to develop and clarify the concept of aesthetic and moral emotions and to test the hypothesis that aesthetic and moral emotions are, in their essence, the somatic bearers of information that can be analyzed cognitively, enabling a more thorough analysis and identification of the fundamental personal, cultural, evolutionary and historical determinants of both subjective and inter-subjective experience. The implementation of the project will help to create a platform for a broader interdisciplinary scientific and expert discussion on the hermeneutic and cognitive aspects of aesthetic and moral emotions and on the substantiation of cognitive science and philosophical research on emotionality. The project is focused on supporting the integration of the scientific and philosophical approaches used in the examination of aesthetic and moral experience, of some of their specific types, as well as (through the previously mentioned selected types of experience) on a more complex framework of systematic and

interdisciplinary research into the subjective and inter-subjective experience. Hyperlink of the project (outputs, citations, financial support, timeline): http://kpsych.ff.ucm.sk/sk/granty/
