Project title: Psychological aspects of tetany syndrome in the context of symptomatology and psychological intervention (VEGA 1/0178/24), deputy project leader
Project characteristics: The project is focused on the exploration of selected psychological constructs in individuals with tetany syndrome. The aim is to propose a model representing a holistic picture of the psychological aspects of the syndrome, explaining the connections (causal, associational, or other) between symptomatology, aspects of experience, personality structures, quality of life, subjective well-being, and coping strategies by applying a mixed qualitative-quantitative research plan. The knowledge gained will contribute to psychological diagnostics and to the improvement of psychological intervention, which can favorably modify the clinical picture (towards the latent form), which in tetanic syndrome is significantly determined by stress and psychological correlates.
Project title: Clinical and legal aspects of self-harm in adolescence (APVV-23-0181), investigator.
Project description: Self-harm in adolescence has become a pandemic (affecting 45.5% of adolescents in Slovakia) with serious risks in both the psychological and somatic areas (a quarter of adolescents report suicidal thoughts in their history of self-harm). The nature of the difficulties associated with self-harm; the fact that it is often kept secret from those closest to them, as well as its taboo status in society, significantly limit the possibilities of seeking help for affected adolescents. However, the necessary professional help and intervention are significantly limited by two facts - the absence of data on important clinical contexts of self-harm and the ethical/legal limits of providing intervention to minors. The presented project aims to provide missing data on 1/ psychological difficulties/complications accompanying self-harming behavior and 2/ possibilities/limits of providing care to adolescents within the framework of existing Slovak and European legislation. By detailed analysis of data obtained from clinical, school, counseling psychologists and adolescents, it will be possible to convey data on the most common psychological difficulties, complications, or disorders accompanying self-harm as well as on the nature of their relationship to self-harm. Providing this information will contribute to the emerging knowledge base of the issue (responding to the global challenge of the American Psychological Association), make important data available to practitioners, contribute to a better understanding of this high-risk behavior and the setting of more effective intervention and prevention. Analysis and subsequent interpretation of the legal frameworks of the current Slovak and European legislation and relevant documents (ethical codes) will provide professionals with practical guidance on the options for proceeding in individual cases, thereby removing numerous barriers to the provision of assistance by psychologists. The planned outputs ensure the visibility of the results not only in the scientific field, but also directly count on the provision and distribution of treasures for practitioners.
Project Title: Self-harm: definition, prevalence, influencing factors and implications for clinical intervention (APVV-17-0123), co-researcher.
Project summary: Deliberately inflicting self-harm in an adolescent population is so undesirable and, from many (health and psychological) points of view, risky behavior that its examination by psychologists is necessary. The project plans to carry out basic research that will provide data on the prevalence of self-harm in the population, its forms and reasons, understanding the term itself by the vulnerable group, the definition of this term in the context of new forms and interacting factors, as well as establishing a relevant methodology to determine the occurrence and specific contexts. this phenomenon. An integral part will be to make the obtained results available to the widest possible range of professionals, to formulate implications for possible clinical interventions and to publish research results in relevant scientific forums.
Project title: Development and standardization of screening methodics on identification of occurrence and risk of problematic legal drug use among adolescents, project leader.
Project summary: The objective of the project is psychometric verification (reliability, validity) and standardization (norms) of the Questionnaire on situation-motivational alcohol behavior factors and modified version for smoking (Questionnaires on SMF), determining a screening criterion (measured by Questionnaire on SMF) to identify the risk of future problem drinking or smoking based on a longitudinal study of a group of adolescents (2 yrs. apart). The secondary objective is the research use of Questionnaires on SMF in contexts of diverse developmental problems in adolescents (self-harm, risky sexual behavior) as part of a combination of risk and protective drug use factors (personality, leisure, family factors) and other populations (adults, adolescents with addiction, university students, intercultural comparison). The result of the project implementation will be standardized reliable methodics usable in clinical, counseling, school and potentially also in work-psychological practice, but especially in drug prevention.
