VEGA 1/0283/20 Synergy of Media Industries in the Context of Critical Political Economy of Media, duration: 2020 - 2022, co-investigator of the project, project leader: doc. PhDr. Višňovský Ján, PhD. Annotation: The project aims at a deeper understanding of the practices and commercial imperatives of media production that proliferate within a late modern liberal-democratic society. The main aim of the project is to produce a body of theoretical-empirical knowledge that develops a critical political economy of the media and aims at delineating the actual commercial potential of media industries, as well as a series of scholarly papers tied to particular media industries and their economic or commercial aspects. The fulfilment of the set objective is conditioned by the application of research tools of qualitative and quantitative nature and the synthesis of the empirical knowledge obtained. The implementation of the project is based on the assumption that the economic, technological and cultural convergence of media industries brings not only the concentration of ownership and the creation of media oligarchies, but also the synergy of technologies, resources, stories, ideas and themes based on massive licensing and the formation of transmedia narratives.
APVV 21/0115 Hypermodern Media Culture - Film and Television Production as a Mirror of Socio-cultural Phenomena of the 21st Century, duration: 2022 - 2026, project co-investigator, project leader: doc. PhDr. Jana Radošinská, PhD. Annotation: Among the greatest challenges associated with the scientific discussion of media culture can be included the identification of its socio-cultural and value attributes. Through the results of basic research, the project aims to define and explain the socio-cultural phenomena inherent in contemporary film and television production for majority audiences. The researchers draw attention to the presence of intertextuality in film and episodic fiction, the ability of selected audiovisual works to simulate or even substitute objective reality, and the application of so-called retrospective elements that allow recipients to experience feelings of nostalgia and to remain in indirect contact with cultural phenomena typical of previous decades. The research team also focuses on contemporary trends in the representation of real events, social problems, professions or universal human concerns in fictional film and television production. The project is based on the premise that audiovisual production of today inevitably mirrors the socio-cultural contexts of the hypermodern age - although media producers may not consciously or deliberately use these motifs. The research responds to the terminological discrepancies that arise from the interdisciplinary nature of media and communication studies, drawing on the paradigmatic foundations of cultural studies, film studies, television studies, literary theory, and digital game theory. The research team is aware of the fact that the implementation of the project will not provide definitive solutions to the issues raised, but it has the ambition to broaden existing scholarly debates on media culture as a source of simulated elements of reality that define themes of public discourse, create fashion trends and promote cultural values and lifestyles.
FPPV-16-2024 Stylistic Practices in Journalistic Production, duration: November 2023 - December 2024, project co-investigator, project leader: Mgr. Lenka Rusňáková, PhD. Annotation: The issue of stylistic practices is an important aspect of contemporary journalism. The constant development of society and new technologies condition changes in the formation and use of stylistic practices in journalistic practice. A consequence of this phenomenon is the hybridisation or cooperation of several stylistic practices in the creation of journalistic units (texts) representing different journalistic genres. For the above reasons, the subject of the present project is a reflection on current trends in the field of creation of journalistic formations in the periodical press, with regard to working with specific stylistic practices. We focus our attention on news and journalism in the periodical press, pointing out the possibilities of qualitative analysis of selected stylistic practices. Building on the text Publicists in the Periodical Press.Journalistic Genres (Bučková & Rusňáková, 2017) and the university script Journalistic Journalism. Selected Genre Types (Rusňáková & Bučková, 2019), which were intended to clarify the issue of the typology of journalistic genres and to identify the features of selected journalistic genres (genre types) in specific journalistic texts, the proposed university textbook Stylistic Practices in Journalistic Production has the ambition to clarify the current trends in the creation of journalistic and news journalistic genres in the periodical press from the perspective of the application of specific stylistic practices. The prepared teaching text links theoretical and methodological background with its empirical part - the latter includes several qualitative analyses realized in the form of case studies or practical exercises, which are supplemented by control questions and related tasks. Orientation in the issue of typology of stylistic practices is a prerequisite for successful identification of their basic characteristics in the selected journalistic units. For these purposes, the primary aim of the project becomes the compilation of a practical teaching aid for students of media, communication studies and journalism.
VEGA Digital Transformation of Traditional Media Industries: Economic, Socio-Cultural and Law Consequences of the Platform Media Economy, duration: 2025 - 2027, project co-investigator, project leader: Mgr. Lenka Rusňáková, PhD. Annotation: The present research project reflects the issue of digital transformation of the so-called traditional media industries (journalistic, film, radio, music and television production) with an emphasis on the need to investigate specific changes in the areas of production, distribution and reception resulting from the implementation of digital technologies and communication tools in the media industry. The project intends to develop a scheme mapping the economic, socio-cultural and legal implications resulting from the dynamic technological development of the aforementioned media industries, which includes, among other factors, the application of artificial intelligence tools, the rise of robotic or automated forms of content generation, the emphasis on the creation of complex narratives and the economic, as well as technological and creative synergy of the various segments of media production. The team draws attention to a key aspect of the platformisation of media production, which leads to the integration of a wide range of different content and services through user-friendly tools and applications. The different platforms thus serve not only to distribute media content, but also to provide a multitude of services, promotion and aggregation of user data. The project aims to explain the practical aspects of the so-called platform media economy, which favours commercially dominant media corporations and undermines the social relevance of public, local or community media. Particular attention is paid to the personal aspects of media production, or to the unprecedented changes in creative and production processes that are leading to the gradual redefinition or disappearance of some professional specialisations within media production.
