Brief description of the project: The project offers an investigation into the correlations between distortions of political consciousness and the rise of political extremism among young people in the Košice and Prešov regions, combined with proposed measures for their elimination. The methodological baseline for the research on this issue will be the levels of political consciousness theoretically developed by Professor Marcela Gbúrová in several of her studies. The project aims to build upon the research on secondary illiteracy in the Slovak Republic conducted between 2016 and 2018 (VEGA No. 1/0658/16), within which the concept of individual levels of political consciousness (naïve/insite, informed, professional, theoretical) was introduced in greater detail.

Project title: “It’s Not True, but It Could Be”: Conspiracy Theories and Hoaxes in the Modern Development of Slovakia in a European Context

Brief description of the project: Conspiracy theories and hoaxes are far from being just "innocent disruptive elements" of the ultra-right or ultra-left scene; they also represent a serious security threat. They act as an imaginary trigger for tension, carrying the potential to lead to a fundamental polarization and radicalization of society, which could prospectively escalate into deep internal social conflicts, violence, ethnic cleansing, genocides, or even civil wars and the disruption of social consensus (i.e., existing state borders, a new geopolitical rearrangement of the world, etc.). This broad-spectrum dimension, as well as the minimal reflection of conspiracy theories and hoaxes in the Slovak academic and general public environment so far, prompted a team of 25 experts in the fields of history, political science, ethnology, religious studies, and security studies from three Slovak universities (UMB Banská Bystrica, UKF Nitra, UPJŠ Košice), two university-type academies (AOS Liptovský Mikuláš, APZ Bratislava), and two institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Institute of Political Sciences, Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology) to create a joint project platform for the humanities and social sciences and attempt a new perspective and contextualization of their significance. The project is an effort to analyze the history of conspiracy theories and hoaxes in Slovakia in a European context from 1918 to the present, while simultaneously striving to symbolically "bridge" the past and the present, aiming to analytically contribute to the discussion on one of the most debated phenomena of the 21st century.

The primary goal of the project is to activate students in searching for, verifying, and disseminating information about political processes. The fulfillment of the project goals is guaranteed by the research team's experience in addressing the issue of secondary illiteracy among selected social groups of respondents and other defective phenomena in the political and public life of the Slovak population after 1989.

Brief description of the project: The project focuses on developing an assessment of the level of secondary illiteracy in the Slovak Republic in the field of conventional and unconventional types of political participation through hierarchical forms of participation. The objective is to establish theoretical and methodological foundations for studying secondary illiteracy in politics within an interdisciplinary framework of philosophy, political science, public policy and public administration, and sociology, with respect to selected areas of socio-political life through: 1. Civic participation, 2. Political participation, 3. Socio-demographic differentiations. The goal of the project "Research on Secondary Illiteracy in Politics in the Slovak Republic" is to begin filling the research gap regarding the declining interest in public affairs, as well as to start uncovering the political and sociological causes and contexts of this state. Within the concept of SI, the project team's ambition is to analyze the status of SI and its impact on political developments in the Slovak Republic, and to develop a theoretical model for assessing SI alongside recommendations for its eradication in the context of the Slovak Republic.
